“Who decided 'dental' was a good enough reason or excuse to forget our mouth, the most important part of our body for health.” - Eric Chong
There's a silent killer on the loose and 90% of America's at risk. It's been hidden, lurking in the shadows and hiding right beneath your nose. Almost all disease starts from the mouth, 70% of all heart disease and breast cancer begins in the mouth we know this from evidence and X-rays. Even in the 1600s, "teeth" were labeled 5/6 of the top leading causes of death, we now know teeth are not just in the top ten, they cause most if not facilitate all the other top 10 reasons! Health is from Head to Toe and you simply cannot have a healthy body without a healthy mouth.
Everyone wants to talk about the science and focus about research facts and statistics the problem is we have to take a step back and look at the bigger picture just like dentists need to take a step back out of the mouth and realize that there is a living patient with a beating heart and just because something is dental or a living patient walks through their dental office it doesn't mean that you forget that the medical and health related need of their treatment is not just more important but is the primary reason that they are there they just happen to need a specialist or someone that is licensed to do work in the mouth but they don't need a dentist or dental work, they need a doctor that is trained to and in some cases specializes in the specific work or treatment that they need in the mouth. Science may be good for research, but fundamentally flawed because the isolation required to do studies is the exact opposite of what's required in real-life. We need a systems approach for a systems problem such as our body. It's no wonder a silver bullet approach never worked.
If you're looking for evidence of science for the importance of over oral health you're looking at the wrong picture what you need to ask is what part of this treatment or what part of dental is not medical? It's the reverse question most people didn't think to ask but it's the most important one which is understanding the primary and most fundamental reason you would never go to a dental office is to get healthier not just in your oral health but your overall health and well-being. This is why it's easy to diagnose a problem when you look at X-rays that just show the body in an isolated region it's like looking at a room through a keyhole. You cannot properly address the root cause without looking at and considering the whole picture and body. It's easy to see when you zoom out on the X-rays and you include both the chest and the mouth you see in 70% of cases and now we're finding it's closer to 90 but now at least 70% of the cases there is invisible infection in the mouth and you can see that stream or infection drop down into their chest cavity and create heart disease or lung cancer.
This is why we have so many stories of people suffering from intestinal issues gut issues mental health issues and of course breast cancer and heart disease like I talked about and once they get a dental issue taken care of something like an infected root canal or infected tooth or jaw all of a sudden the rest of their problems get better as well. People go from taking over 10 medications to less than two a reduction in over 70% of the medication and eliminating of over 70% of the treatment or conditions that used to bother them before even pain and long term chronic conditions seem to magically disappear once a person gets a full and complete refresh of their mouth to better their health. We talk about this but most dentists are only trained in infection removal and teeth pulling but there's much more to oral health than that, when you incorporate the mouth is part of the body and look at saliva genetic factors the indicators for long medium and short term health on the tongue lips gums teeth cheek and our fluids we get a much better idea and comprehensive look of our health through the snapshot of our mouth. It truly is the biggest and greatest source of wisdom and information for our health and overall well-being that has been ignored in conventional medicine and dentistry.
I got the worst call that any child should ever get, it was news that my father died unexpectedly suddenly without notice or warning. If you've ever lost someone suddenly or in a surprise it doesn't make it better or worse than knowing when someone's going to go however many say that surprise deaths are much harder to cope. I had so many unanswered questions, and it was made worse by the report of his death.
There were so many things that didn't make sense however, he had a strong immune system, never got sick, even when everyone else would get sick or tired. The report after he died said undiagnosed heart disease, but the problem with that was, it didn't make any sense, I didn't buy it and there had to be a better explanation. My father saw the best doctors in the US & Korea, got scanned for cancer and disease regularly, he was actually being told he looked better than ever and could come off his medications that he was prescribed at the time, less than two weeks before his death.
Did something happen in these two weeks? Did my dad get poisoned, killed, murdered? How could the healthiest, strongest man I know go down, without so much of a fight? .....or at least any fight that I could see.
You see, after you die, it's not a doctor that checks you, its a person at the morgue. This person is not a doctor, they just see the heart stopped with infection and say its heart disease. So naturally, I had questions like, How does an infection magically occur and start in the middle of a body? How does it get there, if it didn't start there? What is the source of infections and disease?
After asking these questions I realized it wasn't disease of the heart that killed my dad, or anything to have to do with his chest at all. It had everything to do with his mouth. not just the death, even the diabetes medication, high blood cholesterol, and high blood pressure, instead of taking that medication, if they just removed the primary infection in his jaw, he would have been okay. It was caused by a dental treatment that was then overlooked by every other doctor after, a Root Canal Treatment (RCT) that had gone bad like many do over time.
Whether its from an infected RCT, chipped tooth, or just exposure to toxins, ignoring dental leads to devastating health issues not just in the mouth, but in every other area and part of our body. Don't delay your dental needs, even a day. I've learned its best to skip the doctor in most health issues and visit a dentist first, not just any dentist, but one that understands the mouth-body connection and is versed and capable in treatment using that philosophy. In today's society, it's rare person to find a Good and qualified dentist, which is also the fundamental problem of delivering health in our country.
The biggest myths I'd like to debunk is that dental and medical is separate. Of course the insurance companies want us to believe this but why does anyone else. Why does your dentist, the office manager at your dental office, and as a result, even you probably believe or have acted as if you believed the same thing. Dental is Medical, and just because we walk into a dental office we shouldn't forget about the needs of our health, heart, and our body always come first over the needs of our teeth or looks of our smile. I think we can all agree dental insurance is a scam. It doesn't deliver on any of its promises and continues to do less, however, it seems we got so caught up in counting pennies, we didn't notice the looters taking us by the bag!
We can and must demand our dentist and dental office to accept our medical and health insurance. As long as we are living and our heart is beating, we should not forget about the medical and health needs of our body. Any dentist or dental office manager that tells you they don't accept medical insurance because they are a dental office, isn't just ignorant, they are doing themselves and you a disservice. There's plenty of other dental practices, if they are more worried about taking your money than being a dentist-doctor, find a better one. Almost everything we are told about healthcare is wrong but fundamentally when it comes to our healthy habits and getting help from healthcare. We must be vigilant about getting the right education and avoiding unethical and harmful products and services.

It's the biggest most important part of our healthcare system, but its also fragmented and inconsistent. Patients want help with their health without having to go from doctors office to office, and now dental office to office thrown in the mix, its even too much for healthy people, how can we expect patients to do this while they are in pain, or worse. Currently you visit a dental office, pay $200-300 for an initial exam only to be sold about all the problems you have that the dentist sees The problem is, if you take the same patient to 10 dentists, you will get a 10 different answers and opinions. Just like the saying going "If you're a hammer, all you see is nails." and dentists are more focused on seeing or selling what they can make money from. Many times patients find themselves not needing work or having done work they regret because they did it too fast without more research.
Dentists are different in the way they think, practice, and even care for patients. It's like flipping a coin with your health and the treatment you get. It's no wonder dentistry has gotten such a bad reputation. Even if most dentists are going the best they can, which I truly believe is the case, there is too much advancement in technology and with it the rise in expectations and techniques for treatment, its hard for any dentist to keep up. Most dentists are learning new techniques and sometimes preferentially choose some treatment over others. In the process, its too easy to forget or overlook primary or more important health concerns because the provider is fishing for profit, instead of patient care. The old way of dentistry is outdated, and must change.
So by now you should know, especially in the US healthcare system for 70-90% of health issues you're better off avoiding a hospital and/or trip to visit ANY medical doctor, WHY? because they may treat or give you drugs for symptoms, but you'll end up worse off as a result, if you feel any better for a short time, if at all. So asking patients to skip a doctor and blindly visit a dentist is another recipe for disaster. You see, with every new problem there are solutions, but with every new solution there is also a new set of problems. Unless these are considered and accounted for, we may end up creating a worse solution. The solution is to do your own health planning, and a pre dental check, to get dental help before you go to a dental office, or any doctor, hospital or any help for your health.
Ever since most of us can remember we were told that we need to plan for our future we need a plan for our education we needed plan our career we need to plan our marriages we are encouraged to find good friends everything but the most important part of our life, which is our health. Insurance companies governments and Regulatory Agencies all have a plan for us, Doctors, Hospitals too, they aren't our friends, they are making money and profiting from our sickness. we shouldn't trust someone that withhold solutions and waits for us to get sick only to offer a harmful solution that we have to pay money, time, and literally blood, sweat and tears now also. Medicine has not just taken our choice for care, its figuratively taken the lives of the ones we've loved. That ends by us making the choice to plan our best health for us. You've heard the wise saying, "if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. It's the same for your health, you should make a health plan for you, that benefits you first, not a plan, provider, hospital, facility, politician, or anything other than you.
Plan for your best health, learn how to do health planning for yourself, your family, your friends, and the ones you love. Trust me on this, if you don't make your plan, other insurance companies and drug corporations will make one for you. They already have been doing it, and making you believe it was a good choice by removing good, healthy healing treatment, and mandating only quick-fixes, symptom-based solutions, and profit-driven products and treatment. We live in a profit-based healthcare system, it's a fact. Only when you realize that can be aware and accurate about your escape from someone else's plan back to your own plan to better your health.
